Agency partners with NGO, Trains Persons with Disability on Basic Security and safety measures in Bauchi
AGENCY FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES, BAUCHI In collaboration with Kennedy-Lugar youth exchange and student association of Nigeria organized a one day seminar on Accessing Basic Security and safety measures for persons with disabilities at Destination Hotel Bauchi which featured representative from the 20 LGAs of Bauchi state Nigeria.

The Bauchi State Agency for Persons with disabilities in collaboration with Kennedy – Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Association of Nigeria a Non-governmental Organization organized a one-day training on accessing basic security and safety measures for persons with disabilities.

The Executive Secretary of the Agency for Persons with Disabilities Bauchi, Hon. Brisca Joram Aaron appreciated His Excellency, Sen. Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed Kauran Bauchi the Executive Governor of Bauchi state for resuscitation the agency making Bauchi state the only state in North-Eastern Nigeria operating with the agency and works are currently ongoing to finally get a commission for the agency. With His Excellency’s support, we were able to bring together Participants across the 20 LGAs of Bauchi state alongside major stakeholders ranging from Foundations, Nigerian Police Force, CSOs and media houses across the state.
Hon. Brisca while speaking to our reporter at the event urges the security agencies to find a suitable means of communication properly with the disabled as everyone is equal in the eyes of the law therefore, they deserve to be aware of Government policies and laws of the land regularly. The ES further implore all media houses and CSOs to collaborate more in discrimination of information to such group of persons in our society.
DSP who represented the honourable commissioner of police at the event speaking to our report noted that
The Seminar is more of an awakening call when you begin to hear needs and instances between people Living with disabilities and the security agencies. I think so far I can deduce that it is more of communication issues and of coz the Nigerian Police force is aware of the persons living with disabilities in the society but ignorance to the Law is not an excuse to commit a crime and it is most times difficult for the Security Agencies to able to recognize such persons hence, the need for means of identification is paramount in other for the securities to be able to Recognize them at a spot.
The NPF, therefore, call on CSOs and the Government to lias and provide means of identification to them such as a bracelet or any other means.
Barrister Gambo YAKUBU a legal practitioner and the president of YOUAide a non-governmental organisation that helps facilitate information, carrying out awareness programmes, skills acquisition projects and human rights activities spoke to our journalist at the event,
The barrister noted that;
In anything we do as a society to attend equality of everyone we must carry out projects or facilitate in carrying out of projects and I believe people living with disabilities are as important as anything you can imagine so we will do anything to make them aware of the security challenges and how to protect themselves and their families.
While recommending to the Government Barrister Gambo urges the Government to build or provide access for disabled people into public buildings or public places and the police, in particular, should let these people know their rights and things that should be carried out and ensure implementation of such recommendations that the police are involved in today’s seminar.
speaking to the chairman Initiative for the liberalization of physically challenged people in Nigeria Hamza Waziri Muhammad as a participant of the seminar. The initiative for the liberation of physically challenged people in Nigeria is an integrated non-governmental organisation that Focuses on providing remedies to social issues, welfare, and education of people living with disabilities here in Bauchi and I was able to have understood that nobody has the Monopoly of anything in this life and we are also part and parcel of the community.
Further said that it is the cardinal responsibility of every responsible Government to secure protect the lives of each and everyone is respectful of whether disabled or not in regards we can see that some CSOs sees us as part of the Society for organising such type of events most of us now have the right picture to know that there is no special treatment as we are all equal in the sight of the law and we pleading with the Bauchi state legislative arm to fully domesticate the disability Right bill which will give us equal rights to have access to education and public environment.

Our correspondent spoke with the founder of IKRA Foundation for Women and Youth Development an agency that empowers women, and Vulnerable people and Protect their rights against GBVs.
Magistrate Amina noted that;
when it comes to gender-based violence IKRA foundation have been creating awareness and advocacy offline, online and on local Media and her foundation gives vulnerable persons more opportunity u to live because if you do not know what the Law Says you Cannot abide by it. we have partnered with Asmau who have an association for women with Disabilities, we created campaigns and awareness apart from that we have a hotline that if such occurrences happen so that we can now be able to follow Up to provide for the legal, and Social supports and make sure the case reaches the police and ensure that it is ruled in the Court of law where justice will be served With support from the United Nations and partnership with the ministry of women affairs we were able to establish Gender Response and referrer network in 10 LGAs in Bauchi State and we have women trained in 20 LGA of Bauchi state that follow Ups all Cases of GBVs till it reaches us in the State.
She also told our reporter about her recommendations to the State Government ;
My Recommendation to the State Government is for the Government to help the community of persons living with disabilities by Sponsoring the bill of discrimination against persons living with disabilities for the domestication of the law to provide protection and care for such Special sets of persons in our society.
